Improved public washroom access along the Cabot Trail

Tuesday, May 28, 2019

The Province of Nova Scotia is investing a total of $332,000, through the Tourism Revitalization of Icons Program (TRIP), to improve the visitor experience along Nova Scotia’s iconic Cabot Trail.

Funding has been awarded to the Municipality of the County of Inverness and the Municipality of the County of Victoria to address much-needed public washroom access on the Cabot Trail.

“The Cabot Trail is one of Nova Scotia’s most iconic destinations and a magnet for first-time visitors to the province,” said Geoff MacLellan, Minister of Business. “We need to ensure that they enjoy a world-class experience while in Cape Breton, and these are long-overdue improvements.”

The Municipality of the County of Inverness will install comfort stations in communities along the Cabot Trail. The project cost will be $296,500 with Tourism Nova Scotia contributing $186,000. The Municipality of the County of Victoria will expand washroom facilities at the visitor information centre in downtown Baddeck and install visitor-focused comfort stations in the communities of Wreck Cove, Cape North and Bay St. Lawrence. Tourism Nova Scotia will contribute $146,000 toward a project cost of $292,000 over two years.

All comfort station locations will be accessible, approached sustainably and maintained by the respective municipalities. Visitor information will be provided by municipal partners to promote nearby attractions and amenities encouraging visitors to explore the region.

Communities and visitors alike have identified a lack of comfort stations and washroom facilities as a crucial gap in Cabot Trail infrastructure.

Tourism Nova Scotia has earmarked $1 million through TRIP for infrastructure enhancements along the Cabot Trail over three years. Other projects will be announced once confirmed.
